Cell Phones Not Widely Targeted In Canadian Provincial Take-Back RegimesAugust 20, 2006 Canada - Alberta, Canada - British Columbia, Canada - Manitoba, Canada - Nova Scotia, Canada - Ontario, Canada - Saskatchewan - Product Take-BackAlthough many Canadian Provinces have begun to develop and implement regulatory regimes for the take-back of certain end-of-life electronics, most jurisdictions have focused on computer products and have not targeted cell phones.
Of the six Provinces that have in place or are considering some form of electronics take-back regulations, only Ontario and Nova Scotia expressly include cell phones in the list of covered end-of-life products. Alberta regulatory authorities have expressed an intent to regulate used cell phones, but they have not yet adopted any specific plan or proposal for doing so under the current regulatory framework. Regulations in Saskatchewan and British Columbia, as well as Manitoba’s proposed approach, contain no reference to cell phones. More detailed analysis of each Province is provided below.
