The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (“Newfoundland”) has announced plans to fund and implement its 2002 Solid Waste Management Strategy (the “Strategy”), modernizing its approach to solid waste collection, transportation, treatment and disposal. The Strategy includes reducing the number of active landfills by 80% by 2020 and developing waste diversion programs to achieve an overall 50% reduction in the amount of waste going to landfills by 2015. The waste diversion component includes disposal bans, recovery programs, collection centers for recyclable materials, and research into additional programs.
