UK Launches Public Consultation on Transposition of EU Battery Directive

January 16, 2008

UK - Batteries

In December 2007 and January 2008 (for Nothern Ireland), the UK launched a public consultation on options for implementing the requirements of Directive 2006/66/EC on Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators (the “Battery Directive”) in the UK. Through this consultation, the UK Government and the Devolved Administrations are seeking the views of producers, distributors, collectors and recyclers of batteries and accumulators and items containing batteries and accumulators, and any other interested parties, on possible approaches (but no actual draft regulations) for implementing the directive’s provisions relating to the production and sale of new batteries and accumulators, and the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of waste batteries and accumulators. The Consultation Document is written as if the same approaches to implementation will be taken across the UK, but it will be for the Devolved Administrations to decide whether they wish to introduce their own legislation to transpose the environmental provisions in the Directive.
