Nova Scotia's Electronic Products Stewardship Program Now in Effect

Nova Scotia's End-of-Life ("EOL") Electronics Stewardship Program (the "Program") took effect as of February 1, 2008. The Program was approved by the Minister of Environment and Labor on October 5, 2007, and implements the Nova Scotia Solid Waste-Resource Management Regulations (the "Regulations") under Section 102 of the Nova Scotia Environment Act (see links below). Under the Program, retailers will charge consumers an Environmental Handling Fee (“EHF”) on the sale of Phase I products to cover the costs incurred by brand owners in collecting, recycling, and managing Phase I EOL products. Products covered under Phase I of the Program include computers, monitors, printers, and televisions. The Program is intended to be consistent with electronics stewardship programs in other Canadian provinces.
