European Commission Proposes Amendment of Article 6(2) of Battery DirectiveMay 4, 2008 European Union - BatteriesOn 17 April 2008, the European Commission submitted to the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament a proposal for an amendment of Article 6(2) of the Battery Directive (Directive 2006/66). The proposed amendment makes clear that batteries must not be placed on the Community market after 26 September 2008 if they do not comply with the Directive, but “non-compliant” batteries placed on the market before that date would not have to be withdrawn. This amendment had been announced earlier this year by the Commission as a “fast track” improvement of EU legislation to reduce administrative burdens.
