Canada Finalizes Rules Restricting the Manufacture of Certain BFRs

Canada recently finalized its rules prohibiting the manufacture, import and sale of certain forms of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which is a class of brominated flame retardants currently restricted by the EU RoHS Directive. Significantly, the regulations target raw materials and do not apply to manufactured articles or final products containing PBDEs that are imported or already in use in Canada, such as electronics and electronic components. However, the government noted that these products will be addressed through additional management actions in the future.
