Basel Convention COP-9 Expands Work on E-Waste Through 2010

August 11, 2008

International - Transboundary Waste Shipments

Parties to the Basel Convention met for the Ninth Conference of the Parties (COP-9) in Bali, Indonesia from June 23-27, 2008 and took a number of actions concerning the future management of e-waste. As expected, the Parties launched a new Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment (PACE) and largely concluded the Mobile Phone Partnership Initiative (MPPI). In addition, the Parties outlined a robust work program on e-waste through 2010 that includes a number of projects in the Asia-Pacific, Latin American and African regions. One additional critical element of the 2008-2010 work program will be the preparation by the Parties of Technical Guidelines on Transboundary Movements of E-Waste, which will focus primarily on clarifying the distinction between waste and non-waste under the Convention.
