India Publishes Draft National Hazardous Waste Management Strategy for Comment

Published April 9, 2009

India - Hazardous Waste

The Ministry of Environment and Forests of India (“MoEF”) issued the draft National Hazardous Waste Management Strategy (”Draft Strategy”) on March 26, 2009.

The Draft Strategy, once it enters into force, will act as a guidance document for the regulatory bodies, generators of hazardous waste, recyclers and operators of facilities to facilitate minimization, recycling, treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes in an environmentally sound manner.

The Draft Strategy focuses, among other classes of wastes, on electronic waste (“e-waste”), used lead-acid and other batteries and discarded products such as fluorescent bulbs and tubes containing mercury. The Draft Strategy also emphasizes extended producer responsibility and provides that this would necessitate export and import of e-waste.

Details on the Draft Strategy, including the original text and details on comment opportunities and timing, are available on EIATRACK.
