Chile - Industry Launches Cell Phone Take-Back Initiative

Chile - Product Take-Back

Although Chile is still developing national e-waste regulations, some companies are moving forward with their own cell phone take-back plans. The cell phone provider Claro Chile and the Santiago Metro have recently joined forces to launch a take-back plan to collect used cell phones from the public. Residents in Santiago will be able to drop off their cell phones – apparently of any brand – in one of 92 special green containers placed at each metro station in the Santiago subway system. The take-back plan has a social component in which an educational charity will receive a specific amount for each cell phone deposited in the recycling containers. Representatives from both the Santiago Metro and Claro Chile, along with the Sub-secretary of Telecommunications, were present for the inauguration.
