Chile Bill Proposes Eco-Label To Require Carbon Emissions and Environmental Impacts

Published December 12, 2009

Chile - Packaging and Labeling

Congressmen in Chile have submitted a proposed revision to their country's Consumer Protection Code that would require manufacturers, importers and distributors to label all products with information on the carbon emissions, water use, and other environmental impacts posed by their products. This eco-label initiative has its roots in European initiatives, but the concept is gaining ground across the Latin American region as evidenced by a similar proposal in Brazil that has already cleared the Senate.
