Switzerland - Restricted Substances Overview

Swiss legislation restricting chemicals in products differs, on various points, from EU requirements. Where differences exist, the Swiss requirements tend to be more strict, or more comprehensive, and have a wider scope.

The Swiss Government is currently reviewing its chemicals legislation. A draft proposal, entitled “Ordinance on the reduction of risks linked to chemical products,” would foresee the repeal of the existing “Ordinance on Substances.” In some respects, Swiss legislation would move closer to EU requirements. Nevertheless, some of the Swiss requirements would remain stricter than those imposed by the EU’s chemicals’ legislation.

The Swiss Government is currently reworking the draft. The new requirements are expected to enter into force in the Summer of 2005. See link to full special report below:
