Maine Mercury-Reduction Bill (L.D. 1665/H.P. 1224) signed into law (Chapter 373)
June 27, 2001
USA - Maine - mercury
Maine Governor Angus King signed into law on June 8 a bill aimed at reducing the release of mercury into the environment from consumer products. The most important aspects of the new law to EIA members are that, first, it broadens the definition of "mercury-added product" under the existing labeling law to potentially include more types of switches; and, second, it requires that manufacturers notify the Department of Environmental Protection if they intend to distribute a "mercury-added product" in the state. The bill goes into effect January 1 2002. See Maine, Restriction of Substances to read a summary of L.D. 1665.
