UNEP to Launch New Partnerships on Mercury

March 14, 2005

International - Restricted Substances Overview

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), at its 23rd Governing Council held February 21-25, 2005, made several important decisions regarding mercury. The Governing Council agreed to delay a decision on whether to commence negotiation of a global agreement on mercury. Instead, a U.S. proposal for developing voluntary partnerships to address mercury releases was embraced. The U.S. will have a lead role in assisting UNEP with future partnerships. The U.S. is expected to reach out to the electronics industry in the coming months to explore the possibility of a partnership to reduce mercury use. The proposal for an international treaty on mercury (and possibly other metals) will be re-visited at UNEPs 24th Governing Council, scheduled for February of 2007.
