Introduction
Illinois has joined the states that restrict the use of certain toxic substances in electronic products. Toxics in Packaging Legislation: Illinois has adopted legislation modeled after the Model Toxics in Packaging Legislation which regulates packaging containing cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury. Mercury-Specific Legislation: Illinois bans the sale or use of certain mercury added products such as mercury switches, mercury relays, mercury fever thermometers, and certain mercury-added novelty products. Effective July 1, 2008, Illinois also bans the sale and installation of mercury thermostats.
Defined Restrictions:
Mercury: Prohibition on the sale and manufacturing of certain mercury-added products. Mercury switches and relays are categories of universal waste.
Packaging: Regulated metals must be below 100 ppm for each package or packaging component.
