Introduction

Chile has ratified the Basel Convention and, like all ratified treaties in Chile, its provisions are directly applicable domestically.  In 2005, Chile informed the Basel Secretariat of its adoption of a national definition of hazardous waste (See, Hazardous Waste in Chile) thus establishing its use for purposes of transboundary movements.  Notably, Chile’s hazardous waste regulation classifies certain discarded batteries and electrical components as presumptively hazardous wastes, unless it can be demonstrated these do not present any hazardous characteristics.
