Introduction
The EU published a proposal for a regulation on persistent organic pollutants in June 2003. The proposal seeks to amend existing EU legislation as well as to give effect to the main provisions of the Stockholm convention and the UNECE Protocol which are currently not yet sufficiently covered by EU legislation. Under the heading POPs, the Commission regulates 11 pesticides as well as PCBs. Please note that in the EU currently a ban on the use of PCBs is in place under Directive 76/769/EEC.
