Introduction
In The Netherlands EU requirements on cadmium are transposed into national law. The legislation has been laid down to protect the environment from cadmium contamination. Part of this legislation has direct relevance for products imported into the EU. This document describes these product-related legislative requirements:
- Cadmium restriction applicable to all products and product parts where cadmium is used to colour, stabilize or plate specific products
- Cadmium restriction in packaging materials
- Cadmium prohibition in electrical and electronic equipment
The Netherlands has implemented two EU directives that impose restrictions on substances in electrical and electronic products. These directives include the RoHS Directive, and Directive 76/769 relating to restrictions on the marketing and use of certain dangerous substances and preparations. Directive 76/769 restricts many chemicals, including asbestos, azo dyes, cadmium, flame retardants, and PCBs and replacements, and such restrictions may apply generally or to specific applications.
This report discusses the Netherlands implementation of the RoHS Directive. It touches very briefly on the Netherlands legislation imposing restrictions pursuant to Directive 76/769.
Defined Restrictions:
All articles: 0.01% by mass (if cadmium is used as coloring agent or stabiliser)
Specified articles: prohibition (if used for cadmium plating)
