Introduction
British Columbia’s Recycling Regulation requires “producers” to operate or participate in approved stewardship programs or follow a default program prescribed by the Regulation for a number of covered products, including electronics. The schedule under the Regulation for electronics includes desktop and laptop computers, printers, monitors, mice, cables, and televisions. Since the electronics stewardship program became effective in August of 2007, two industry associations have developed and implemented approved plans. In 2008, the provincial government announced plans to expand the electronics product category and add mercury-containing products to the list of electronic equipment subject to the Recycling Regulation.
