Introduction
Several Canadian municipalities and provinces have adopted waste diversion measures targeting batteries, including mandatory take-back and recycling programs in British Columbia and Ontario, in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of their disposal. A voluntary, industry-funded battery recycling program has operated throughout Canada since the 1990s, and a national action plan calls upon all provinces to implement mandatory battery take-back programs within the next five years.
