Introduction

Several Canadian municipalities and provinces have adopted waste diversion measures targeting batteries.  In September 1997, with direction from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (“RBRC”) and the Canadian Household Battery Association (“CHBA”), the National Charge Up to Recycle! Campaign was introduced in Canada to recover nickel-cadmium (“Ni-Cd”) rechargeable batteries.  The program has since been renamed “Call2Recycle” and expanded to include cell phones and nickel metal-hydride, lithium-ion, small sealed lead acid and nickel zinc rechargeable batteries.
