Introduction

The Ontario Environment Ministry sponsors the Pollution Prevention Pledge Program, a voluntary program based on ad hoc partnerships with industry that is part of the province's Initiatives in Pollution Prevention. The terms of pollution prevention pledges made by particular companies and industry sectors are recorded in memoranda of understanding entered into by the parties. Environmental authorities in Ontario describe the program as an effort to 'tilt' the playing field in favor of companies that are proactive or are making voluntary environmental protection commitments.
