Introduction

There are no binding standards regarding product take-back for electronics or electric equipment in Chile.  However, this is likely to change in the near term.  Chile’s National Environment Commission (CONAMA) unveiled an Integral Solid Waste Management Policy (“the Policy”) setting forth brief and broad concepts of Extended Producer Responsibility (“EPR”) for the first time in January 2005.  The Policy serves as the blueprint for developing an efficient system for managing wastes, calling for comprehensive changes in the administration, the laws, and the execution of all phases of waste management.  Since adoption of the Policy, CONAMA has been actively working on a plan of action to implement its objectives.  Among other things, development of a framework national waste law and an e-waste regulation is reportedly underway.
