Introduction
Illinois has joined the states that restrict the use of certain toxic substances in electronic products.
- Toxics in Packaging Legislation:
Illinois has adopted legislation modeled after the Model Toxics in Packaging Legislation which regulates packaging containing cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury. - Mercury-Specific Legislation:
Illinois has adopted legislation that bans the sale or use of certain mercury added products. - Flame Retardant Legislation:
Illinois has adopted legislation that regulates products containing certain brominated chemicals
Defined Restrictions:
Toxics in packaging
Regulated metals must be below 100 ppm for each package or packaging component.
Mercury specific legislation
Effective July 1, 2008, the sale, installation, and distribution of mercury thermostats is prohibited.
Flame Retardant Legislation
Illinois law prohibits manufacturing, processing, and distribution of a product, or a flame retardant part of a product, containing more than one-tenth of one percent of pentaBDE or octaBDE.
