Introduction
The Waste Management (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations 2004 (LN 98/2004) transpose the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. They cover all packaging placed on the market in Malta and all packaging waste, but will not apply to the packaging of non-alcoholic beverages as defined in the Non-alcoholic Beverages (Control of Containers) Regulations until 31 December 2007. Until that time, the Non-alcoholic Beverages (Control of Containers) Regulations remain in force.
Defined Restrictions:
Producers shall not import, manufacture, supply or use packaging material and packaging if the aggregate concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium present in each packaging material or packaging exceeds 100 ppm by weight.
with the exception of packaging made entirely from lead crystal glass, glass packaging which exceeds the limits because of the addition of recycled materials, and plastic crates and pallets used in closed-loop systems.
