Introduction

Since 1994, the import and export of wastes has been controlled in Korea by the Act on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (the “Transboundary Waste Act”), which is based on the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (the “Basel Convention”).  In December 1996, Korea joined the OECD and the Transboundary Waste Act was amended in 1997 to reflect the OECD decision on the Transboundary Movement of Waste for Recovery.
