Introduction

British Columbia (“B.C.”) does not currently operate a mandatory take-back and recycling program for consumer batteries used in electronic products. A number of retailers throughout the province participate in a voluntary take-back program for rechargeable batteries managed by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), an international industry-funded non-profit organization. Now called “Call2Recycle” since the addition of cell phones in 2004, the program covers all nickel cadmium (“Ni-Cd”), nickel metal hydride, lithium ion and small sealed lead batteries (weighing up to 2 pounds or 1 kg). Rechargeable batteries that are no longer usable may be returned to the more than 700 participating retail locations in B.C.
