Introduction
The government of Saskatchewan is considering a proposed recycling program for end-of-life information technology and consumer electronic equipment. Under the proposal, supporting regulations would be developed by early 2005, with implementation of a province-wide e-waste recycling program in Spring 2005. The program is expected to be led, funded, and managed by industry, which will be encouraged to use existing recycling depots and systems for the collection and processing of e-waste.
The proposal aims to be consistent with the draft regulations currently being considered by Manitoba. The Saskatchewan Environmental Protection Branch estimates that recycling charges of $10 to $15 would be placed on each new computer monitor, $7 to $10 on each new central processing unit, $2 to $3 on each new laptop, $6 to $10 on each new printer, and $20 to $25 on each new television set. The province-wide e-waste stewardship program is also estimated to provide 77 full-time positions.
