Restricted Substances

REACH and RoHS

Concerns about ecological and human health impacts resulting from certain substances have generated stringent legislation in many countries. Electronic products are no exception and the need to ensure effective compliance is a critical and continuing process for manufacturers. With a particular focus on heavy metals and other toxic substances, EIATRACK provides valuable and up-to-date information on relevant legislation - existing and forthcoming - that may affect your products.

Chemical restrictions exist across jurisdictions globally. The two most recognized regulations are RoHS and REACH, which emerged from the European Union; now similar regulations have been adopted around the world, including Proposition 65 in California, China RoHS, Korea RoHS and J-MOSS in Japan. EIATRACK makes it easy for companies to follow proposed and enacted chemical restrictions on substances including:

  • Cadmium
  • Chromium
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Phthalates
  • PCBs
  • Benzene and Toluene

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) The Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment 2002/95/EC commonly referred to as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive or RoHS was adopted in February 2003 by the European Union. The RoHS directive took effect on 1 July 2006, and is enforced in each member state. This directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment. It is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods and is part of a legislative to reduce e-waste.

See samples of RoHS reports in EIATRACK and other restricted substance information below.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances) The new EU chemicals legislation, REACH, was formally published at the end of 2006 and entered into force on June 1st 2007. REACH is set to drive major changes both in the global chemicals industry and in any industry that uses or processes chemicals. It will affect organisations at every point of a production chain, from chemical manufacturers to chemical distributors to companies assembling products from component parts.
