Design for Environment

DfE & Energy using Products

New product development and redesign can have a significant impact on life cycle environmental impacts across the electronics sector. Design for Environment (DfE) initiatives are locking-in positive environmental attributes such as design for disassembly and recycling, as well as locking-out more negative product features such as fewer hazardous substances and problematic components. EIATRACK provides a comprehensive source of information about DfE and Product Stewardship within the context of government policy and regulation.

Design for Environment is becoming regulated via the Energy Using Products (EuP) Directive, will set requirements to reduce the environmental impact of products that use electricity across their entire lifecycle.

In early 2009, under the new EuP Directive, the European Commission is introducing specific eco-design requirements for electrical and electronic products attempting to minimise this impact.

The Directive applies to nearly all products that use electricity to operate, ranging from street lights to laptops, power packs to vacuum cleaners, and will set requirements with the aim to reduce the environmental impact across the entire life of the product from build through to end of life.
